Let's Unite.

Divided we fall. We must find a way to unite. Otherwise we are the Cleaved In Half States of America. It does not have the same ring.

My fellow UNITED States of Americans,

Let’s get it together.

Literally. Divided we fall. We have to come together.

We need to be united. We’re not the Divided Along Party Lines States of America. Not the Red Then Blue Then Red Then Blue States of America. We don’t change our name every time there is an election. We stay together. We stay united. The United States of America was founded to bring WE THE PEOPLE together.

I’m not suggesting that we all need to agree. On the contrary, the beauty of our country, of what our founding mothers and fathers designed, is that we can disagree and still stay YOU-NIGHT-ED. Democracy means agreeing to disagree, not agreeing to be disagreeable.

Political parties were established not to tear us apart, but to provide a mechanism for us to debate our differences, but then come back together united. Any government official trying to convince us that we need to tear the other side down does not understand democracy. We need to hold ourselves together. Hold our country together. And we can only do that if we work together.

I’m starting a new series of newsletters with purpose of exploring those parts of our country, our lives, our communities that bring us together. The name of this venture is Common Ground. I think the way to better communicate and make decisions about the things that we do not agree about is to first understand where we do agree. If we can find the common ground between us, it will be easier to make decisions that benefit us all.

I’m not sure, yet, where this will go. And I would very much like your help with ideas or suggestions for how we can work together to find some common ground. I know it is out there.

Let’s start acting like we deserve to live here.
